Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Structure Defense Practice Test

Ladder fuels are vertical connections in vegetation that let fire move from ground fuels up into tree crowns. This common issue creates a rapid transition from a surface fire to a canopy fire, making spread harder to control and threatening structures in the WUI.

Mitigation in planning focuses on breaking that vertical continuity. This means creating defensible space around structures by removing or thinning vegetation, pruning lower tree limbs to raise the effective crown base, and reducing or removing ladder-like understory and debris that sit between the ground and the canopy. Engineering fuel breaks, spacing trees, and choosing landscaping with lower ignition risk are also used to limit vertical fuel continuity. It’s important to note that ladder fuels aren’t confined to urban canyons; they occur in many landscapes where fuels are vertically layered, and addressing them helps reduce crown-fire potential wherever they exist.
